이해와 감상
  이 작품의 해석에는 여러 가지 견해가 있다. 첫째 여성의 비극적 심상을 노래한 것으로 ‘정읍사, 가시리, 진달래꽃’으로 이어지는 전통적 비장미를 노래한 것이다. 둘째 남편을 따   라 죽어야 한다는 여인의 의지 표출은 정렬(貞烈)의 여심을 노래한 것이다. 셋째 백수광부는 주신(酒神), 그의 처는 주신을 따라 다니는 악신(樂神)이며, 충만한 깊이인 물의 이미지   를 통하여 사랑과 죽음을 서로 맞바꿀 수 있다는 강렬한 애정 지상주의를 노래한 것이다.   넷째 백수광부는 황홀경에 빠진 무당이며, 그의 아내 또한 무당으로 보는 견해가 있다.
  이 노래는 이별과 죽음에서 비롯된 한(恨)을 노래한 것으로, 한국 서정시에서 흔히 나타나는‘한’의 출발점이 되었다고 할 수 있다. 또한 이 작품의 중요한 제재인 강물은 정지상의 한시 <송인>과 고려가요 <서경별곡>에서도 찾아볼 수 있다.

<배경 설화>
  조선의 뱃사공 곽리자고가 아침 일찍 일어나 배를 저어 가는데 머리가 하얗게 센 미친 사람(백수광부)이 술병을 들고 흐르는 강물을 건너고 있었다. 그의 아내가 뒤를 따르며 말렸지만 끝내 물에 빠져 죽고 말았다. 그러자 그의 아내는 공후(箜篌)를 가지고 공무도하(公無渡河)라는 구슬픈 노래를 불렀다. 노래가 끝나자 그도 물에 몸을 던져 죽고 말았다. 이 광   경을 목격한 곽리자고는 집에 돌아와 자기 아내 여옥에게 이야기를 하면서 이 노래를 들려   주었다. 여옥은 눈물을 흘리며 공후(箜篌)를 안고 노래를 부르니 듣는 사람마다 누구나 눈물을 흘리고 울었다. 여옥은 이 노래를 옆집에 사는 여용(麗容)에게 가르쳐 주고, 이 노래를 ‘공후인(箜篌引)’이라 하였다.
  *이 노래의 작자는 백수광부의 처로 알려져 있다. 하지만 남편이 죽는 모습을 보고 노래를 부른다는 것은 이치에 어긋난다 하여 뱃사공의 아내인 ‘여옥’으로 보는 견해도 있다.
